Lagerfeld Confidentiel

The silver-haired sartorialist, Karl Lagerfeld, is debuting a film this autumn titled Lagerfeld Confidentiel. The film offers an introspective view into the life and times of the icon. With over 150 hours of footage, the film is more than a vessel for entertainment, it is an intimate portrait. Lagerfeld is by todays tabloid-addicted celebri-whore standards, a fashion phenomena. Why? Because this man has achieved iconic status (while still living) and is remains to have an obscure past that was only recently uncovered in last years A Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake (great read by the way). Though, expect no less than any other “fashion life” documentary. It’s replete with glamour, narcissistic neurosis and sky-high luxury. We’d have it no other way.
Lagerfeld Confidentiel debuts in the UK in October.
Update: Virtual Fashionalities
It seems that virtual fashion is indeed the “next best thing”. Shortly after our Monday posting titled “Virtual Fashionalities”, Giorgio Armani announced that he will be opening a store in the virtual reality playground: Second Life. The store will allow consumers to purchase the brand’s top 10 items via “The Linden Dollar” (the Second Life currency) or in real life. Hmmm…we wonder who’s next in line for virtual store debuts? Surely it can’t stop here.

Abercrombie & Fitch does Tokyo
That’s right folks. Abercrombie & Fitch is taking Tokyo by the arm and guiding it into sexed-up, fleshed up American collegiate-wear bliss. The company has just signed a lease to build a flagship in Tokyo’s prestigious Ginza district scheduled for completion by late 2009. However, it won’t be just any flagship it’ll be 11 stories (yes 11), 10 of which are said to actually sell merchandise.
The label has currently jumped on the ever broadening bandwagon of brands to infiltrate the growing area. Bottega Veneta and Giorgio Armani (who recently revealed plans to open a 14-story flagship) are just some of the labels spending major money and expecting even larger profits in this retail haven. These plans are the height of A&F’s goals for international expansion (they opened a flagship in London this past March and have plans for Paris, Milan & Madrid.)
Virtual Fashionalities: H&M & The Sims?

It was only a matter of time before the fashion world embraced the cyber world and its using H&M as it’s vessel. The International Herald Tribune recently published a story regarding how retail giant H&M is teaming up with virtual reality giant The Sims (specifically for The Sims 2). The partnership would give H&M the license to dress players’ avatars (or personal virtual identities), giving new meaning to the words “fashion model”. The players will also be able to buy the same exact outfits to wear themselves in H&M stores. Players can also build H&M stores and participate in a virtual runway competition where they actually design the clothes (if they win the H&M will create and sell the design in stores). Second Life, another virtual reality giant, has also sparked a fashion firework as brands like Lacoste, Aveda and American Apparel are able to sell virtual items for avatars. Tis definitely a new era…
It sounds like fun, but I am kind of an old fashioned girl. I like my fashion tangible and ready to be worn (by my real body). Then again if Martin Margiela ever made a foray into this world, I might reconsider…
Africa:Fashion Week Wars

There’s nothing like a catfight to warm up the catwalksStilettos fly this week as long time rivalries, Sanlam South African Fashion Week (SSAFW) and Nokia Cape Town fashion Week continue to despise one another. For years the two fashion weeks have been at each others throats regarding whether or not South Africa should have 2 fashion weeks (both of which occur at nearly the same time and use the same primary venue) and which one should represent South Africa. SSAFW is accused of luring designers away from NCTFW and for committing other catty crimes fit for a day time talk show (I won’t go into details as this would delve into “rumor” territory and iPapier does not DO rumors darling.) Meanwhile, fashion designers seem to be getting more and more frustrated as the battle continues. Many claim that this rivalry is taking the spotlight off of the designers and creating more emphasis on the corporate end of the business. Tisk Tisk! So much talent comes from this unsaturated industry. Tisk, tisk!
