  • Topshop. More like Copy-shop.

As if you couldn’t have seen this coming a mile away…eventually.

First it was the New Look retail chain, last September, being forced to withdraw thousands of pairs of its Bonbon shoe (similar to a Jimmy Choo product) and reportedly had to pay Jimmy Choo GBP 80,000 after legal action was threatened. Then M&S (Marks & Spencer) fell victim to the crack down in December 2006, having to destroy a GBP 9.50 handbag that was very identical to a Jimmy Choo evening bag priced at GBP 495.00.

Now, the Granddaddy of all high-street has felt the wrath of the counterfeit crackdown implemented by many of the fashion industry’s top houses. Topshop, has been forced to destroy almost 2,000 copies of the lemon yellow dungaree dress (see image below: dress on the right) that is nearly identical to a similar Chloe design (see image below: dress on the left). The dresses were being sold at Topshop for GBP 35.00 each. The original Chloe design was on sale for GBP 185.00 as part of their ‘See’ collection. Topshop was required to pay GBP 12,000 in compensation and legal costs.

Although, I will admit to being a fan of Topshop and I do buy there on occasion. This action will definitely prove to be a great step forward for fashion houses hitting back at what seems to have become the bread and butter of many high-street chains (just making identical copies of high end, and selling them on the cheap) , but is forcing Topshop (a multi-million pound in revenue chain store) only to pay GBP 12,000 and taking the dress off the shelves really enough to make a statement? Or should the fashion houses just suck it up and realize that copying of their designs will always be, and just take it as the highest of flattery? I don’t know…what do you think?

  • Fashion Police Iran

It seems that the phrase fashion police has been taken to new literal heights as Iran’s new laws are stopping model wannabes dead in their tracks. Monday afternoon police in Tehran began a moral crackdown on civilians dressed “unIslamic”. It seems that most of the cases have been women (surprise!) and the penalties range from getting pulled aside and told to wear a longer “manto” (an overcoat) or getting whisked away in an awaiting van, with fellow, fashion offenders. The lawbreakers are then sent to the “center for combating vice” where their family is called to bring a appropriate dress to change into. The criminals are made to sign an agreement to not commit the crime again an will face judiciary punishment if they do. Some have been outraged by this, stating that the police need to focus on more serious crimes.I’m assuming that my new hot shorts from American Apparel would not go over well.

Steinberg & Tolkien, vintage, store, closing

First the Spice Girls are back together and now Steinberg and Tolkien (one of London’s hippest and authentic vintage retailers) is closing its doors…for good. The world has to be coming to an end. Yes kiddies, Steinberg and Tolkien has been forced to close their doors due to the latest hike in Chelsea rents.

Steinberg & Tolkien has been a institution of vintage fashion for the past 14 years. However, S&T are going out with a bang…of a sale! So for all you vintage heads here in London, make sure you head over to 193 King’s Road, Chelsea, SW3 5ED and show your shopping support.

  • Embroidery & Explicatives: The Yin to my Yang

One shirt reads: No Time To Fuck. The next: Dirty Little Lovemaker. These are just some of the phrases you’ll see contrasted with feminine, pretty embroidery, lightly written in cursive across comfy shirts from Locher’s. The label which was created and is currently ran by Nicole Locher, was birthed out of her appreciation for turn-of-the-century embroidery. Locher wanted to preserve the stitching technique against something completely opposite of what most associate it with: prissy, ladies who lunch.

    If you hate Children…

    (says: I Hate Children)

If Shoes are what get you off…

These are just the tip of the iceberg, though not all are this blatant…The office is based in France.

  • All Hail Cash Cow Gisele!

When you’re this rich, why ride in a car? Just saddle up nude.

Once upon a time Linda Evangelista (and her other cohorts) didn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. This was in 1990. So let’s calculate shall we: $10,000 x 365 days = $3,650,000. Though in 2007 supermodel extraordinaire Gisele Bundchen, 26, struts circles around the competition of both today and eras past. She recently topped Forbes magazine’s Top-Earning Models List.
Oh, and how much is she making you ask?

    Take a breath…

    $ 33 million.

She trumps Kate Moss (who comes in second with $9 million), along with Heidi Klum ($8 million), Adriana Lima ($6 million) and Alessandra Ambrosio ($6 million) . But before some of us get our knickers in a twist and wail about how models make too much damn money, remember that only a small percent pull this type of income. Let us remember the many models galloping the catwalks every season, making a decent amount of money/publicity, then fading into obscurity. Years ago I thought Laeticia Casta would be where Gisele is now. Where is she by the way?

  • The Jazz Age.

The jazz shoe trend seems to be popping up between both sexes and paired with skinny jeans and tees to cardigans and leggings. I am all for any fashion trend that embraces the comforts of dance attire. Such acceptance truly makes one resort to their inner “Lionel Richie” and proceed to dancing in the streets.

As if social networking and online shopping hasn’t become anymore of a distraction, introducing the new site that will never allow for any work to get done….Osoyou.com. Think Facebook meets Net-A-Porter, IQONS meets e-Luxury, etc.
