Valentino Comes Back out of Retirement!
No, not really. But we’re hoping this headline somehow makes it to the wires sometime this year. Some people need to retire. Michael Jordan needed to retire. Dr. Phil needs retirement. No one shed a tear when Kathie Lee retired. But after seeing photos from Valentino’s Couture show, we’ve come to one certain conclusion: this man needs to design until he dies while sketching his next design in 2023.
The romantic in me sees this. Take a look at the photos:

Chanel, Dior…oh my

It must be great to have millions of dollars to hold a fashion show. Cathy Horyn of the New York Times examines the looks coming out of the haute couture shows in Paris. When one has a million dollars, one can hold a spectacle. Who holds better spectacles than Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s haute couture shows. This is a man who had a runway show on a real airport runway in Los Angeles. Doing things small is anathema to Lagerfeld. So when you look at a 75 foot model of an iconic Chanel jacket and it functions as the backdrop for his show. Yes, a backdrop folks. You come to understand what this is all about. Other favorites include the silk organza at the Dior show seen below

Somehow I think this predicts well for the Fall 2008 collections. We’ll have coverage in Paris for the shows.
Ruminating Backstage

With London fashion week not too far away, I had to pull out one of my favorite photos from Fall 2007’s images on iPapier. There’s nothing terribly special about it, but it sets the tone. The hustle and bustle of workers in the background putting things up and taking things down, models looking half-beautiful as they take direction from people wearing all manner of headphones right before they go to makeup and the giftbags waiting for people to pick them up. Still going through all the photos from last season Anne-Marie…you’re a photographic genius.
Alef Opens Bookshops

Alef comes with a unique idea in the form of book shops similar to what you find in Colette in 9 Villa Moda locations next month and we couldn’t be more excited. The fashion and lifestyle magazine that breaks the ceiling in the mid-east and Arabic speaking regions, promises to bring the beauty and style to these bookshops from a Middle Eastern perspective. We dig the covers something ferocious. Peace at long last we believe is not far behind.

Cavalli Spice?

When Roberto Cavalli showed his menswear collection during Milan’s menswear fashion week, his friends the Spice Girls showed up and made him an honorary member. As an aside, the buzz behind his men’s collection (yes, he actually showed one) is super strong. The press is championing the cause in a major way.
Underground fashion in Moscow

English language Moscow-based The Moscow Times has a cool article on a fashion show that takes place in a cold war era-styled bunker. Complete with it’s own 80s reel to reel and a variety of exhibits within the (as they term it) “claustrophobic bunker”, several fashion designers took part in a fashion show at the museum that consists of items from only two decades ago.
Designers with names like White.Trash.For.Cash made good use of the space with their imaginative collection. We’re not sure what 2,000 rubles equates to in your currency, but that’s what it costs for visitors who are not Russian citizens.

“I bought my cute boots somewhere at Grünerløkka, the coat, beanie and tights are H&M, and the scarf was bought in France. I don’t care much about what people think of my style, as long as I feel comfortable and nice!”
