Glasgow Represented at London Fashion Week

August 27, 2008

Aimee McWilliams

When I read this I said to myself, thank GOD!! Glasgow will finally be represented at London Fashion Week in a proper way. Ok, I may not have gone that far, but I do think that if a designer like Aimee McWilliams can come from a city like Glasgow, then there must be plenty of other talent coming from this city. To that end ‘Glasgow: Scotland With Style Design Collective’ is happening again at London Fashion Week. 8 designers from Glasgow including designer of the year award winner at last year’s Scottish Style Awards, Aimee McWilliams.

The project awards designers from Glasgow a chance at £90,000 and face time with buyers, investors and the press. Normally these designers wouldn’t get a chance at doing this because of the high costs associated with putting on a show, but this event allows them the opportunity to do just that. A recent member of the collective is award winning, popular designer Christopher Kane. A good chunk of the Papierdoll office I hear is rooting for Aimee McWilliams.

Sex and the City in London

May 13, 2008

Sarah Jessica Parker

It happens very rarely, but it does happen. London will get a movie before it premieres in the States. That happened last night at the Sex and the City premiere in London. The stars were out on the Red Carpet and the cast of the movie was there in full force. Sarah Jessica Parker posits that the reason the premiere was done in London is because they have such great food…we kid. She’s been quoted as having a love hate relationship with New York. According to Parker, she plays a role (however minor) in New York’s overexposure. She feels that the city is overpriced and is lacking in character (reports of a Wal-mart being placed somewhere in New York may be greatly exaggerated).

Parker apparently has never been in the tube or taken public transportation in London. Things are expensive in that city if not more so. But what’s expense to a person who has a cut of the profits of a multi-million dollar film? Not much. Not much at all.

First Fashion East Now This!

May 7, 2008

Danielle ScuttDanielle Scutt is creating a capsule collection for TopShop in the UK. That in and of itself is astounding news. The really wonderful news is how beautiful the collection looks. There’s always this (sometimes justified) fear that designers who create high end collections will scrimp on the details when it comes to something slightly downmarket. From the photos it’s obvious that Scutt scrimped on nothing and created a collection in the same family as her autumn/winter 08 runway collection. The other concern is, if she has this capsule collection for TopShop, does it detract from her vaunted Autumn/Winter 08 collection.

The thinking is, why get something that costs more when you can get it’s cousin that costs less. The news for Scutt is good here as well. Although the collections are vaguely similar they are not the same. Time will tell how successful the TopShop collection really is, but most will be happy to have anything from Scutt.
